Background of the Study
Religious pilgrimages have long been integral to cultural and spiritual practices, serving not only as acts of devotion but also as events that shape family economic behavior. In Ikenne Local Government Area, Ogun State, families frequently participate in pilgrimages that demand considerable financial outlay for travel, accommodation, and related expenses. Such financial commitments often challenge household budgets, prompting a reevaluation of priorities and resource allocation (Adeyemi, 2023). The interplay between spirituality and financial management has attracted scholarly attention as families navigate the costs associated with fulfilling religious obligations. Rising travel costs and evolving economic pressures compound these challenges, influencing how families plan for such events and potentially affecting long-term financial stability (Okoro, 2024). Moreover, the cultural imperatives of community support and social expectations contribute to an environment where personal sacrifice for spiritual gain becomes routine. This dynamic calls for an in-depth examination of how pilgrimage-related expenses impact overall household financial health. Increased scrutiny from both policymakers and community leaders has emphasized the need to understand these fiscal implications, ensuring that families are better prepared to manage their resources without compromising essential needs (Bello, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the revered status of religious pilgrimages, families in Ikenne face significant financial challenges due to high associated costs. The recurrent nature of travel expenses, accommodation fees, and related expenditures places undue pressure on limited household incomes, often forcing compromises in other essential areas such as healthcare and education. The absence of structured financial support systems further exacerbates these issues, resulting in potential economic instability. This study seeks to delineate the extent of financial strain imposed by pilgrimages and to explore viable strategies for mitigating the adverse economic impacts experienced by families (Adeyemi, 2023; Okoro, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the financial impact of religious pilgrimages on family budgets.
  2. To examine the role of socioeconomic factors in influencing pilgrimage expenditures.
  3. To propose strategies for alleviating the financial burden on households.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the extent of financial strain experienced by families during religious pilgrimages?
  2. How do socioeconomic factors affect expenditure patterns for pilgrimages?
  3. What measures can mitigate the financial challenges faced by these families?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. There is a significant relationship between pilgrimage expenses and family financial stability.
  2. Socioeconomic status significantly influences the allocation of resources for religious pilgrimages.
  3. Effective financial planning strategies reduce the economic burden on families.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the economic repercussions of religious pilgrimages on family finances in Ikenne. The findings will guide policymakers and community stakeholders in developing support systems that ease financial stress, thus promoting sustainable religious practices and improved household financial management (Bello, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the financial implications of religious pilgrimages on family finances within Ikenne Local Government Area, Ogun State. It does not extend to broader cultural, psychological, or longitudinal economic impacts.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Religious Pilgrimages: Organized journeys undertaken for spiritual purposes.
  2. Family Finances: The management and allocation of financial resources within a household.
  3. Socioeconomic Status: An individual’s or family’s social and economic position measured by income, education, and occupation.
